At Home Water Filtering Techniques

This is a multi-layered filter system you can set up at home to purify your water. It is made up of three different layers of sand, gravel and activated charcoal.

Bio-Filter

This is a multi-layered filter system you can set up at home to purify your water. It is made up of three different layers of sand, gravel and activated charcoal. It is referred to as a method of streamlining water to filter impurities in the water starting from the largest to the tiny impurities in the water.

What You Need to Set Up a Bio-Filter

Sand, gravel, screen, plastic plumbing fitting, activated charcoal, hole saw, and five buckets (food grade five).

The Complete Process

  • Place a gallon of water in an upside-down position.
  • Create a hole on the top of the gallon. It is from this hole that you will pour in the materials you need for the filtering and also the water.
  • Pour in activated charcoal first into the gallon. This will make up the last layer through which the water will pass through. It is also in this last layer that very tiny impurities are removed. Also, harmful bacteria, and microorganisms and chemical remain in the water can be removed with carbon.
  • The second layer to pour in is the sand. The sand stands as the second to last layer. It is in this layer that smaller particles and impurities are removed.
  • The last material to pour in is the gravel. The gravel forms the first layer, and it is made up of pebbles. This layer helps to filter out bigger particles like small creatures, sticks, and leaves that are inside the water.
  • After passing the water into this filter system, the bond to come out clean.

Charcoal Filter

This filter system is similar to the Bio-filter system. The major difference is that the charcoal filter system makes use of coal instead of gravel or pebble. It is a good alternative if you cannot construct the bio-filter or if you are doing the whole process outside.

Materials You Need

  • Sand
  • Plastic bottles
  • Charcoal
  • A clean cloth

The Complete Process

Complete the first two steps outlined in the bio-filter process. Pour in crushed charcoal inside the plastic bottle to serve as the last layer. This should be followed by sand. Place another container under to hold the filtered water and pour the water through the filter system.

Boiled Water System

A lot of people ignore this filter system. It requires simply boiling your water to remove all impurities. You will need a bigger pot and a larger fire to purify a larger volume of water. Always ensure that you bring the water to a boiling point for at least three minutes before you remove from fire.

Solar Water Disinfection System

Things You Will Need

  • Plastic water containers
  • Direct sunlight

How to Go About It

  • Pour in the quantity of water you need to purify into a plastic container for water.
  • Place the container in a place that has a direct sunlight.
  • Ensure that the water is covered thin screen to prevent new impurities from getting into the water.
  • Leave it under the sun for at least 2 hours.
